Islam is not a Pacifist Religion

Anestos Canelides’ latest essay concerns the Islamic concept of Holy War as propounded by the late Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the leader of the Iranian revolution in 1979.

Islam is not a Pacifist Religion
by Anestos Canelides

We are told that Jihad is merely an inner struggle, but that is only half the truth.

There are two definitions for Jihada or struggle. The first one is the greater Jihad, or the inner struggle against, say, the flesh and temptation. The second is the lesser Jihad or the war of conquest against the infidel via the sword of Allah. The lesser Jihad is what we fear while Islam and some of its followers today still dream of world conquest and the restoration of the Caliphate. The late Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini makes this all very clear in his 1989 essay reprinted in The Legacy of Jihad by Dr. Andrew Bostom (page 226).

The Ayatollah states in his essay that Jihad is struggle against idolatry, sexual deviation, repression and cruelty. The definitions of these terms are different in Islam than amongst non-believing Westerners. The motives for wars of conquest by the non-believers are of course not so noble and pure as Islam’s reasons for war. The Ayatollah asserts that the conquests launched by the infidel are aimed at promoting animal lusts and pleasures.

Jihad, to the Islamicist, is pure and holy. When territories are lost to the armies of Allah, Muslim fundamentalists are unconcerned, even if whole countries and cultures are wiped out. They don’t care if their victims are made homeless or die in the process of conquest. This is simply because all countries conquered in the name of Allah will be marked for everlasting salvation. It is in order to save us — the infidel — that Muslims struggle against us in the cause of Allah.

The Ayatollah also clearly says, “Those who know nothing of Islam pretend that Islam counsels against war.” Islam clearly believes that the faithful must kill all those nasty unbelievers, or they will kill them (the Muslims). Muslims must attack before they are devoured by the infidels, and they must not surrender to the unbeliever.

This seems somewhat infidelophobic to all of us unbelievers, or to moderate Muslims who oppose the fundamentalist version of Jihad.

War is much more than an inner struggle to orthodox Muslims such as the late Ayatollah. It is a struggle by the sword against unbelief. He again states, “Whatever good there is exists thanks to the sword and in the shadow of the sword! Does this mean we should surrender (to the enemy)? The sword is the key to paradise, which can open only for holy warriors.”

There are literally hundreds of other Qur’anic verses and hadith sayings that assure Muslims of the value of war, and urge them and to wage Jihad against unbelief with the sword.

The Ayatollah also asks and answers a rhetorical question at he end of his essay: “Does all that mean that Islam is a religion that prevents men from waging war? I spit upon those foolish souls who can make such a claim.”

To Orthodox Muslims such as Ayatollah Khomeini, Jihad is truly a holy war against those that don’t believe. It is not only an inner struggle against those spiritual demons we all face day to day, but a tool of conquest in the name of Allah. The Muslims must save us from our unbelief.
