Syria's Assad facing dissent over Deraa crackdown

Syria AMMAN: Syrian President Bashar al-Assad faced dissent within government ranks with more than 200 members of his Baath Party resigning and signs of discontent within the army over the violent repression of pro-democracy protests.

Two hundred party members from Deraa province and surrounding regions resigned on Wednesday after the government sent in tanks to crush resistance in the city of Deraa. At least 35 civilians were killed in the attack, rights groups said.

Diplomats said signs were also emerging of discontent within the army where the majority of troops are Sunni Muslims, but most officers belong to the same minority Alawite sect as Assad.

Assad sent the ultra-loyal Fourth Mechanised Division, commanded by his brother Maher, into Deraa on Monday. Reports from opposition figures and Deraa residents, which could not be confirmed, said that several soldiers from another unit had refused to fire on civilians.

"The largest funerals in Syria so far have been for soldiers who have refused to obey orders to shoot protesters and were summarily executed on the spot," a senior diplomat said.

Another diplomat said there was at least one instance this month of soldiers confronting secret police to stop them shooting at protesters.

The Curiosity Files - The Dung Beetle

I received a copy of The Curiosity Files - The Dung Beetle e-book from The Old Schoolhouse Store to review. I had never used one of The Curiosity Files e-books before. I was pleasantly surprised.

The quality of this e-book is exceptional. 78 pages of fun and learning, all on the computer. Included along with all the information about the Dung Beetle are:

Bible study and memory verses
Math, history, and geography investigations
Literature and suggested book list
Writing, spelling, and vocabulary activities
Beautiful copywork pages (manuscript and cursive)
Science observations, projects, and experiments
Discussion questions
Art, crafts, drawing, and coloring pages
Lapbook and notebook pages
A physical education activity
Internet resources and video links
Complete answer key

The answer key even includes the answers for the puzzles. No trying to look through the word search to help your child find the word.

If you wanted to, you could print out the whole book. But the beauty of an e-book is you only print what you need. You can customize it to your needs. The Curiosity Files e-books say they are for ages 8-13. I used this one with my 10 and 12 year olds. I think it could also easily be adapted for the under 8 crowd. They wouldn't be able to do all of the puzzles and activities, but they would certainly learn a lot. These e-books are great for families with multiple ages.

One of the activities that we did from the e-book involved labeling a drawing of the dung beetle. Instead of printing out the sheet, I had them draw the beetle, then label it.

Here's what they came up with:
The 10 year olds drawing

The 12 year olds drawing - She wants me to say that she was rushing to finish so she could go play with her cousins!
The e-books even included links for websites about the subject. While I had the e-book open, I clicked on the video we wanted to watch, and it opened the webpage. No stopping what were we doing to type in the web address in the browser. We were able to watch a video of dung beetles rolling their dung balls back to their homes. Yes, dung beetles make balls out of dung. Your welcome for that little tidbit of information. In case you want to witness that activity up close, the e-book has directions for building a dung beetle farm in an old ant farm. My son wants to find an old ant farm so he can do that. Let's just say I'm not as excited as he is to try it.

Did you know that the dung beetles roll the balls by pushing it with their back legs while crawling backwards? One of the activities included was for having the kids use a ball of some sort and roll it with their legs while crawling backwards. My son had fun trying that. He would not let me take any pictures of him doing it, however. lol

I really loved this The Curiosity File e-book. I think these e-books would make a great, fun supplement to your curriculum. These would be awesome for the summer months when you could take your time going through them. I would say there's enough material and activities to last for 2-3 weeks (or more), depending on how much you do every day. And the best part? Everything is planned out for you! No lessons plans involved! Just pick want to do that day, and go for it.

Keeping the kids entertained and learning during the summer, with very little prep work on your part (just printing the activity pages) is a win-win situation!

You can purchase The Curiosity Files at The Old Schoolhouse Store. I counted 11 different titles at $6.95 each. As of this writing, there are several for $1. each. They are a bargain at $6.95 each. But a $1? What a deal!

Disclosure: I received this e-book for free for the purpose of reviewing it. I received no other compensation. My opinion is my own.

Lilies in Moonlight

Lilies in Moonlight: A Novel

From the back cover:

He’d lost his zest for life. She was just lost. Will they find the healing and love they long for?

After a roaring night on the town, fun-loving flapper Lilly Margolis, dazed and disoriented, twists her ankle and falls into the backyard of a wealthy family where the effects of the Great War—over for more than half a decade—are still endured. Inside the walls of the Burnside mansion, Cullen Burnside, a disillusioned and disfigured veteran, and his widowed mother, Betty Ruth, who daily slips a little further into dementia, lead a lonely existence … until Lilly. Whimsical, lighthearted, and beautiful, she rejuvenates their sad, disconnected lives and blossoms in the light of their attention.

But Lilly, like Cullen, is hiding from a painful past. And when Cullen insists on returning her to her faraway home, their budding attraction seems destined to die on the vine. The resulting road trip becomes a journey of self-discovery—but what will Cullen and Lilly find at journey’s end?

My Review:

Last year, I reviewed Allision Pittmans' The Bridegrooms. Lilies in Moonlight, and The Bridegrooms are 2 of the 3 books in the authors baseball books. They are not a series in that the story line is continued in the books, but all 3 books have baseball in the storyline. So you don't have to read the other 2 books before you read Lilies in Moonlight.

Lilies in Moonlight tells the story of Lilly Margolis, and starts shortly after she leaves her mothers house to make it on her own. We see and hear about some of the things that Lilly has done in an effort to take care of herself. Things her mother wouldn't approve of.

One morning, she is found in the backyard of a wealthy family. The son, Cullen, is a former professional baseball player with numerous problems of his own.  He tries hard to get her out of their house and lives, but his mother as fallen in love with Lilly. Because of his mothers illness, he tries to please her in every way, including letting Lilly stay at their house. Cullen eventually falls in love with Lilly, too, but he doesn't want to admit it. Especially to Lilly.

To make his mother happy, Cullen takes everyone on a road trip. While on the road trip, Lilly realizes the mistakes that she has made, and tries to make amends with her mother. By the end of the road trip, Cullen comes to realize that he can not put his life on hold for his mother and confesses his love for Lilly.

Lilies in Moonlight is a story of love, forgiveness, and God always being there for us, not matter what we have done.

Making a Home - Macaroon Fail

I had some fresh coconut left that no one was eating. So I decided to make something with it. Since it's Passover, I had to find a recipe without leaven.

I came across this recipe for Macaroons.  Only 5 ingredients! Coconut, sugar, egg whites, vanilla & salt.

First I had to grate my coconut. The grater blade on my food processor broke, and grating all those pieces of coconut by hand did not sound appealing in the least. So I put all the pieces in the food processor and processed until small pieces. It worked great.

I put the dough in the fridge to cool for about 30 minutes, although the recipe wasn't clear on chilling the dough.

Instead of making cubes or pyramids like the recipe called for, I just spooned them out and slightly flattened them.

The recipe said if your pans were well seasoned, you could get away without using the parchment paper. Since I didn't have any and my pans are well seasoned, I just baked them on the pans.

After baking, I tried to take the cookies off the pan. They stuck to the spatula, and fell apart. So I tried leaving them on the pan for a few minutes.

When I came back, they were firmly stuck to the pan. I had to work at getting them off the pan.

So , my first attempt to make macaroons was a fail. They were, however, delicious. We ate all the crumbs. lol

Failure in the kitchen is important. How else do you come up with really yummy new recipes? Besides, it lets the kids see that I can mess stuff up, too. And gives us all something to laugh at. While we're eating the crumbs. lol

Visit the website for the recipe for macaroons.

These are definitely worth making. I do suggest using the parchment, though! lol
